Effective Sign Design

Fit Does the sign meet city sign ordinance? Does the landlord approve? How is the sign mounted? Is the sign illuminated at night? Do you have power to the sign?

Form Viewing distance and Time is a primary factor. See viewing chart. Sign letters must be distinguishable from surroundings. Choose bold typestyles and spacing for readability. Script forms are not legible over long distances. Add a border to focus the viewer’s attention. Use an accent color for important or special information. Use light colored letters on dark background (in reverse) creating contrast. Contrast is easier to read and letters appear larger. Add graphics to increase viewer appeal. Change colors, message, and graphics frequently to draw constant renewed interest.

Function Is the sign a Directional, Informative, or Sales focused? Think through your message. Permanent signs require more forethought. Temporary can be changed out. Indoor signs require close detail. Outdoor signs require large readable fonts from a viewing distance. The sign image and message is projected 24 hours a day. Font and graphics should complement the industry and message. Is it Professional, Sophisticated, or Fun?
